Program Activities
Our program is designed to help scholars succeed. S-STEM scholars will:
- interact with peer mentors
- complete a 1 hour Strategies for College Success course
- complete a 1 hour Job Search Strategies course
- participate in career awareness seminars
- work with professional advisors who are available when you have questions
Peer Mentors, who are successful transfer students majoring in a STEM field, will interact with S-STEM scholars in the Strategies for College Success course and serve as a resource for S-STEM scholars throughout their time at OSU.
The Strategies for College Success course is a 1 credit course that S-STEM scholars will complete during their first semester in the program. This course will introduce S-STEM scholars to campus resources, study skills, GPA and course grade calculations, OSU rules and regulations, life management strategies, financial literacy, careers in the life sciences, and portfolio development (i.e., documenting their experiences and best work).
S-STEM scholars will enroll in a 1 credit Job Search Strategies course during their third semester (i.e., fall semester before spring graduation) in the program. This course will include activities and discussions related to increasing awareness of careers in the life sciences, identifying career goals, developing and implementing a career plan, searching for jobs in the life sciences, translating skills and experiences into job applications, and developing resumes, cover letters, and interview skills.
S-STEM scholars will interact with professionals from different career tracks through Career Awareness Seminars. S-STEM scholars will attend formal seminars, as well as informal events with seminar speakers, such as student-speaker luncheons or receptions. These events will provide an opportunity for speakers to discuss the qualifications and expectations associated with their jobs and allow S-STEM scholars to interact informally with seminar speakers and develop networking skills.
Academic advising in the College of Arts and Sciences is provided by professional advisers. Jim Hull and Melissa Gentry serve as advisors for the biological science, physiology and zoology degree programs. Jim and Melissa will work closely with S-STEM scholars to help them maintain eligibility and meet degree requirements.
